Marimekko — means “Mary’s dress”

maybe that is why I have always been drawn to these iconic patterns!

I think I may be a little “old” to wear a Marimekko dress…….

BUT:

If you look around my house or in my fabric stash you will see that I often pick patterns that are reminiscent of the designs from this Finnish company.
My research for this post took me to the MarimekkoWikipedia entry and I found the history of the company fascinating.
Read on to see the way my daughter found to have a piece of Marimekko art on her kitchen wall!

Amanda purchased a set of 2 Unessa Tea Towels ($29.00) a while ago. She wanted to frame one for her kitchen.

I thought- “What an original idea!” ( Bright woman my daughter!)
Research again and I discovered that she wasn’t as original as I thought!
Sorry Kiddo!
Here is an image from a post at Door 16…looks like we stole this idea without even knowing it….
Or as I would rather think-Great minds think alike!

Sweetwater Style Version
 Aren’t the similarities almost spooky?

How I did it:
1 Frame From Goodwill

Spray Mount/tape and a scrap of foam core to mount the towel
Black Mat Board cut with my trusty Mat Cutter

Put it all together and there you have it!

Cost: about $20 including frame and mat
Considering that Marimekko fabric runs about $44 a yard and you would have to cut and finish the edges…this makes way more sense.
Check out the tea towels at Amazon if you are interested in doing this!

I took a little walk around my house this morning….Here is a tour of some of my uses of  Marmekko inspired fabrics:

The new cushions on the Malabar Chairs in the living room.
The chairs were a steal from Craig’s list a couple of years ago…just waiting for this fab fabric!

A remnant of Marimekko inspired upholstery fabric wrapped around a canvas frame in the Dining Room.

The Fabric on the $3 Goodwill stool at the kitchen desk….rare photo…my butt not on it!

A Table runner on the kitchen table….a remnant I just had to have!

The shower curtain in the guest bathroom….lovin’ the orange and brown!

Last….this little plate on the vanity….a $1 GW find!

Now I am off to enjoy the last official vacation week day of my summer…..the sun shines, the garden awaits….I am not going to waste a minute and you shouldn’t either!
