March on Sweetwater means I am yearning to get out in the garden!
March in Minnesota means we are at least 2 months away from being able to do that!
This kid’s song lyric is stuck in my head-
The green grass grows all around, all around
The green grass grows all around.
Since this is what the Sweetwater back yard looks like today….

I grow my grass indoors!

Here is the RECIPE:
Hard Red Winter Wheat Berries
(these are just wheat seeds that you can buy in the health food section of most grocery stores….I get mine by the pound in the bulk section of Lakewinds Coop here in Minneapolis for $.80 a pound)
 Potting Soil
I use Miracle Grow Moisture control….but any dirt will do!
Plastic wrap   Water  Sunshine
 Directions with a Sweetwater Disclaimer:

You could search the internet and get fancy complicated directions about how to grow wheat grass….

You could get all OCD about sorting, sprouting, draining and carefully laying those seeds in the dirt….

BUT….Since you read this blog….
YOU can do it Sweetwater Style….and it will work!
Back to the SIMPLE HOW TO:
  1. Soak a bunch of seeds in water for a couple of hours.
  2. Find a fun waterproof container…..almost anything will work…I sometimes use plastic food container tops.
  3. Put about 2 inches of soil in the container and water that down a little
  4. Spread the pre-soaked seeds evenly over the soil…..almost like frosting the dirt…yes that thick!
  5. Water this well….not sloppy wet…but wetter than you would normally water a plant
  6. Cover the container with plastic wrap to make a little “greenhouse” for your seeds!
  7. Place the container in a sunny window.
  8. Wait a couple of days….Check….add water if it looks like it needs it….wait a couple of days more….

Sometimes the container I want to use is deeper than a couple of inches.
I hate to use a lot of that expensive potting soil (man am I cheap!)
Since the seeds only need a couple of inches to grow, I soak white paper towels and put them in the bottom of the container and then add the soil!  Works like a charm!

I got the cutest little vase shaped like Rubber Boots at GW yesterday!

The little pails will be centerpieces on the tables in the Media Center at school…the kids love to smell the grass!

In about a day you will see little sprouts…

In less than 5 days your sprouts will be about an inch tall….

In a week you will have “DECOR”!

I found you some great examples of ways to decorate with wheat grass….Enjoy!

Wouldn’t this be a great looking Easter Table Centerpiece?
Well…It would if I didn’t nibble on the chocolate bunnies and ruin the effect!
Maybe if I used PEEPS I could solve the nibbling problem…..I HATE Peeps!
But this is kinda cute!

These Gerbera Daisies in wheat grass remind me of the gorgeous centerpieces that were everywhere at my nephew’s wedding this summer….
My brother flats and flats and flats of the stuff!
He did it the right way….and it looked amazing!
Don’t you love the look of the stones around the edge of this!
I am doing this for sure!
Here is a link to a blog post from Home School Mom-Country Momma Cooks who grows wheat grass as a science project
I am going to make little “Gifts of Spring to Come” for hostess gifts.
I will package all the “ingredients” in a nice container…
Add a tag with the directions”…
Tie it up with a bow….
That should brighten some one’s day!

But….since it is a rare 50 degree March day in Minnesota…..that little project will just have to wait! I am going outside to play!
